Every Ekadashi has special religious significance in India. One of these major fasts is ‘Apara Ekadashi’, which is celebrated every year on the Ekadashi date of Krishna Paksha of Jyeshtha month. This time Apara Ekadashi is on 23 May 2025, Thursday. On this day, Lord Vishnu is specially worshiped, by following which, the possibility of freedom from sins, attainment of virtue and salvation also increases. According to religious beliefs, keeping fast on this day gives the fruits of virtuous works like Ashwamedha Yajna and Kanyadaan. This Ekadashi is considered beneficial for traders, students and people associated with judicial fields.
Apara Ekadashi is also called ‘Achala Ekadashi’ and is also known as Papanashini. By this fast, a person not only gets rid of the sufferings of the present life, but the sins of births are also destroyed before it.
This year, the date of Apara Ekadashi will start from 22 May 2025, on Wednesday night at 8:20 pm and will be till 23 May 2025, Thursday night at 10:30 pm. The time of fasting Paran (Dwadashi) will be on May 24, 2025, from 5:40 am to 8:20 pm on Friday. On this day, the most auspicious time for worship will be from sunrise to day throughout the day, especially from 06:00 to 08:30 in the morning, it is considered highly fruitful.
To worship on this day, first of all, take a bath clean and wear good clothes. After this, light a lamp in front of the idol or picture of Lord Vishnu in the house or temple. Then, offer yellow flowers, basil leaves, panchamrit and yellow bhog. Keep fast or Nirjala fast throughout the day and follow the fast according to your ability. The next day, after passing the day of Dwadashi, donate food to Brahmins or needy.
According to mythology, Lord Krishna told Yudhishthira about the importance of this fast. He had said that a person who observes Apara Ekadashi fast, he gets freedom from vagrants like ghosts, vampires and finally attains the world of Lord Vishnu. A king of Mahishmati Nagari took inspiration to walk on the path of justice by performing this fast and established religion.
The word ‘Apara’ means ‘infinite’ or ‘infinite’. By observing this Ekadashi fast, a person gets infinite virtue and gets freedom from all kinds of sorrows. In religious texts, it has been considered an important means of attaining wealth, fame and salvation. On this day, worshiping Lord Vishnu not only removes the crisis of the present life, but also gives freedom from the sins of his previous births.
