At the Narendra Modi Stadium here on Thursday, the Gujarat Titans were defeated by 33 runs by the Lucknow Super Giants in a high-scoring contest.
The losing team’s best scorer was Shahrukh Khan (57). Other contributions to GT were Sherfane Rutherford (38), Shubman Gill (35), Jos Butler (33), and Sai Sudarshan (21).
The most effective bowler for LSG was Will O’Rourke (3 for 27 in 4 overs). Ayush Badoni and Avesh Khan both took two wickets.
Earlier, when the team scored an incredible 235/2 in their 20 overs, opener Mitchell Marsh smashed the quickest century ever scored by a Lucknow Super Giants hitter in Indian Premier League (IPL) history with a 64-ball 117.
On a black dirt surface, Marsh chose to bat first. He produced his first-ever IPL century, complete with ten fours and eight sixes at a strike-rate of 182.81, by being brutal on loose deliveries and displaying some amazing power-hitting abilities. Marsh’s hammering 25 runs off a Rashid Khan over was the most notable feature of his incredible knock.
While Nicholas Pooran, who was promoted to number three, made 56 not out off 27 balls, laced with four fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 207.41, he was well-supported by Aiden Markram, who made a fast 24-ball 36. Since none of the bowlers were able to leave a lasting impact on a wicket that was nothing short of a batting beauty, GT’s night was one to forget.
After being forced to bat first, Makram and Marsh both hit seven boundaries in a calm power play that resulted in 53 runs, with the latter being dropped twice. Arshad Khan also had two delivery stride errors in his first over during the six-over phase, but he recovered well enough to finish his allotted number of overs.
With a straight six off R. Sai Kishore, Marsh reached his fifty off only 34 balls after finding his stride and smashing six boundaries from overs 7–10. Even though Markram’s wicket from Kishore gave GT a much-needed breakthrough, Pooran got things rolling by hitting him for six over long-off.
Marsh went into beast mode when Rashid eventually returned to the attack in the 12th over, swiping, cutting, lofting, and pulling him twice to score 25 runs. Before he and Marsh hit 20 runs off Siraj’s last over, Pooran kept hitting spinners for boundaries. Before Marsh reached his century in 56 balls, the pair each took four off Arshad.
Marsh then ended his partnership of 121 off only 52 balls for the second wicket with Pooran by hitting Krishna for consecutive sixes in the 18th over before slicing to backward point off Arshad. LSG recorded their third-highest IPL total when Pooran hit Arshad for six and Rishabh Pant lofted and hit Rabada for two sixes in the last over.
