A knife attack at the main train station in Hamburg on Friday left at least 12 people injured, including six in life-threatening condition, according to local emergency services.

“According to initial information, a person injured several people with a knife at the main train station,” Hamburg police said in a post on X.

Police sources later confirmed to local media that a female suspect was arrested at the scene. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.“

A spokesman for the Hamburg fire department told AFP that 12 people were wounded in the attack. “Six people sustained life-threatening injuries,” the spokesman said.

Emergency services responded swiftly, treating some of the victims inside trains. Police said three individuals were critically injured, three others sustained serious wounds, and six had minor injuries.

Some victims were treated aboard trains, the German daily Bild reported.

The incident has caused significant disruptions at one of northern Germany’s busiest transportation hubs. Authorities have urged travelers to avoid the area while the investigation continues.

Germany has faced a string of violent attacks in recent months. On Sunday, four people were injured in a stabbing at a bar in the city of Bielefeld.
