Lush, glossy leaves and white blooms draw everyone to , perhaps why they have earned a place as a beloved staple in UK homes. This elegant houseplant thrives indoors with aesthetic appeal and , plus it requires little maintenance. Even novice owners will have success getting peace lilies to flower, so long as their basic needs are met.
Some people may have encouraged in spring, expecting them to last until summer, but most peace lilies return in late summer. If you are trying to get a peace lily to flower again, there are several things that can affect flowering in the , says Graham Smith, MCIHort, a horticultural expert from . He told Express.co.uk: "Ensure that the plant is receiving enough light, as peace lilies that are placed in the shade are not likely to flower compared to those placed in bright light."
While many peace lily owners might opt for where the plant looks best indoors, Graham notes that position is important to encourage blooms.
"Peace lilies can tolerate a range of indirect light levels, but their favourite light conditions are somewhere in bright, indirect light", he said.
The plant expert continued: "Regardless of the time of the year, they should not be placed near a south-facing window where they will receive strong, direct sunlight.
"This is because direct sunlight can scorch the leaves of the peace lily and damage the plant."
Flowering can also require a lot of energy, so it's important for gardeners to regularly feed a peace lily throughout its growing season (spring and summer).
A houseplant-specific fertiliser or foliar spray feed applied to the leaves will help a peace lily that's struggling to bloom.
Not all peace lily care is done above the soil surface. Graham urged, "You should check that the peace lily is not root-bound, as this can impact flowering. If the plant is root-bound, repot it into a slightly larger container with fresh compost to encourage blooming."
This is best performed during the growing season, between April and October, so you don't need to wait around to do it.
However, you can wait until the beginning of autumn, says Graham.
When to water peace liliesKeeping peace lilies well watered is important for these humidity-loving plants. The soil of your peace lily should remain consistently moist but not waterlogged.
When the top inch of the plant's soil feels dry, water the plant until water comes out of the drainage holes at the bottom of its container. Roughly thirty minutes after watering, pour out any water remaining in the container.
The horticulturalists suggest misting peace lilies with water or placing the container atop a tray of damp pebbles to maintain humidity.
A bathroom is generally best for peace lilies where there is lots of humidity, and frosted windows allow indirect sunlight.
Frosted glass panes diffuse the light, making it softer and less intense than direct sunlight which scorches delicate peace lilies.
