I recently went on a two-week interrailing trip around Europe and one city stood out to me as the best, one that I would love to go back to and do all over again. Europe is full of beautiful cities and I was lucky enough to see seven of them all as part of one trip. I didn't take a single flight as the brought me from London to the continent and back again, using trains to travel between the cities I visited.
Starting my journey, I took the Eurostar frm London to Brussels and while I was there I spent a day in the small city of Ghent. After that it was a sleeper train to Prague, followed by a train to Vienna, then Munich, Stuttgart and . Each of these cities was unique and fun in their own way, from the to the on-the-go sight-seeing of Paris. However, one city claims the top spot in my list of favourites -- Vienna absolutely blew me away.
Vienna is the capital of Austria and is quite a large city with more than two million residents. I stopped here in the midway section of my journey through and by this stage I was quite tired.
But what kept me going was Vienna's amazing offerings. I was infatuated with this place from the moment I stepped off the train. The architecture, the food and the parks all made a huge impression on me. My first day there was spent exploring the city centre, checking out the buildings in this protected area full of magnificent old buildings.
There is plenty of grandure to see here and I spent many hours simply walking around, soaking up the culture and grabbing a few photos. Places like Schönbrunn Palace and St. Stephen's Cathedral were simply jaw-droppingly stunning.
Day two consisted of more urban exploring, firstly visiting Belvedere Palace. This place is an Instagrammer's dream with its grand stone paths and manicured gardens leading up to the palace. It is a gorgeous walk and you can pay to get into the palace at the end. However, I was happy to just explore the grounds on a sunny day.
If I go back to Vienna as a stand-alone with a more generous budget, I would definitely check out the museums. But this trip was for walking around and exploring the sites, so I continued my tour.
My next stop, which was quite a walk away, was the Prater theme park. With free entry, it is a fun place to walk around and there are plenty of bars and restaurants in here where you will get Austrian and wine as well as the occasional folk music performance. There are plenty of rides and attarctions, all of which you pay for individually, as well as one of the oldest ferris wheels in the world.
I enjoyed taking it all in and walking among local families and groups of friends who were enjoying a day out together. After that, I headed to the area of Copa Beach, a perfect place to relax after a day of walking.
Here you will find locals hanging out by the Danube. There are patches of grass and on the other side of the bridge and even hammocks. Locals seemed to be enjoying a few beers together after work adding to the ambience, creating an atmosphere that was chilled and laid back, a much-neeeded mellow end to my busy day.
When you are in Vienna there is one food you absolutely must try and that is . I absolutely adored this sweet dish as I sat in one of the city's many quaint cafes. I can also recommend the Viennese coffee - a tasty blend of espresso, chocolate and cream.
There is also schnitzel, a traditional Austrian dish that is available in a wide range of restaurants in Vienna. For this, I recommend heading to one of the restaurants in Naschmarkt, a lovely market that has plenty of traditional cuisine as well as bars selling local beers. Like much of Vienna the atmosphere here was excellent, like your favourite but better.
One of my last excursions in Vienna was the Hofburg Palace, another stunning piece of historical architecture that gives you a glimpse into Vienna's unique history and identity. Here, you will find a stunning restaurant and bar in a massive greenhouse where I decided to stop and have a drink. There is also a butterfly house beside that and after you have visited both, you can sit in the scenic grounds of the palace.
In terms of things to do in Vienna, I never ran out of options. With that in mind, there werre a number of things I dodn't get around to, enough for me to be able to fill another trip with. There is the opera for which you can pick up tickets from official sellers dotted around the historic city centre as well as museums like Kunsthistorisches Museum, Belvedere, Albertina, Leopold and the Wien.
The other cities I visited were full to the brim of great things to do, particularly and Munich, but Vienna takes the prize of my favourite European city I have visited so far.
