A side of creamy makes the ultimate side for many comforting home-cooked meals, and is a go-to for many households, which can be credited to the fact that it doesn't require a lot of ingredients. Although there are plenty of things you can add to mashed potatoes to give them a special touch, which many people like to do.

In a cooking forum, users were quick to share the "secret ingredient" they add to their mashed potatoes to make them unique, and there was one uncommon ingredient that users completely swore would .

User BuckyDodge wrote: "Nutmeg".

The one comment generated a series of responses from other users, who agreed, including some who simply repeated the ingredient and added an extra explanation point in each "nutmeg" response.

Glassy_milk added: "I came here to say this! Nobody believes me until they eat it at my house." Another user, alefdc echoed the comment, saying: "Nutmeg of course! Can't believe I had to scroll down so much to find it".

User Ravia, however, warned: "One must be careful not to overdo nutmeg", which is a valid point as too much of the spice could completely ruin it.

Fortunately, an easy recipe published on reveals how to achieve a creamy nutmeg mash that "ticks all the right boxes".

Ingredients:
  • 1kg floury potatoes, such as maris piper, roughly but evenly chopped
  • 125ml whole milk
  • 1/2 nutmeg, freshly grated
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 125g unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp double cream
Method:
  • Put the potatoes in a large pan with a pinch of salt and pour over cold water to cover. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 25 minutes until tender.
  • Drain and return the potatoes to the pan. Cover the pan with a clean tea towel and put the lid on top - this will absorb the steam and keep the potatoes dry and hot. In a small clean pan, heat the milk, nutmeg, bay leaf and butter until the butter has melted and the mixture is warm.
  • Uncover the potatoes, mash, then strain the warm milk mix into the pan. Beat the potatoes with a wooden spoon until fluffy. Beat in the cream for an extra layer of luxury, then serve.
