New Delhi: Cheteshwar Pujara on Sunday said captaining India in the tough conditions of England would be a challenge for a young player like Shubman Gill. Veteran Test player Pujara said it would also be a big opportunity for Gill. If he succeeds as captain on this tour it will boost his confidence a lot. Gill was made the new Test captain on Saturday replacing Rohit Sharma. After the retirement of Rohit and Virat Kohli India will start a new era in the longest format of the game.
Rohit and Kohli announced their retirement from Test cricket within a week this month. Pujara said on Sunday in an online interaction organised by Sony Sports Network the official broadcaster of Indias tour of England Whether you are young or experienced if you go abroad as a captain it will be challenging. It will not be easy for Shubman to start in England but it is a great opportunity for a young player. If he captains well in England it will increase his confidence. Pujara said We have heard that Bumrah will not be able to play all five matches in England so Gill has been given the responsibility to lead the team. He said If Shubhman has been given the responsibility it means that the team management and selectors are thinking that he can lead the team for a long time. Thirty-seven-year-old Pujara has not yet announced his retirement from Tests. He played his last match for India in June 2023. He advised Gill to keep captaincy and batting separate. He said He also has a big responsibility as a batsman but I am sure that with the kind of talent he has he will be successful in England. This will definitely inspire him to perform well. I dont know if being a captain will bring out his best performance or not but as a batsman he has always tried to perform well for the team.
Pujara said When you are playing as a batsman at the top level you never think whether you are a captain or a player you always want to perform well for the team. You should keep it separate. When you are batting in the middle order you should think as a batsman instead of thinking about captaincy.
Pujara has scored 7195 runs in 103 Test matches since making his debut for India in 2010. He believes that the responsibility of captaincy will not change his batting attitude which is aggressive.
He said I dont think his batting style will change. He has to bat the same way he bats. He is an aggressive player he likes to play his shots and he has to continue playing his shots but at the same time he has to understand the conditions of England and find out which bowler will be right.
Pujara supported the decision to appoint Rishabh Pant as vice-captain for the England tour despite poor form. He said Bumrah is out of contention for the role of captain or vice-captain and that is why Pant has been given the vice-captaincy. He is not in rhythm in the T20 format but he has been one of the best batsmen in Test cricket.
He said His record in England has been very good before and he is capable of repeating those great innings. Pujara wants KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal to continue as openers.
He said This role of openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi who batted in the BGT (Border-Gavaskar Trophy) series in Australia should continue. Now talking about number three at this time we do not know whether Shubman will bat there or come at number four. He said If Shubman bats at number four then a player like Abhimanyu Easwaran or Karun Nair should come to bat at number three. I would still like to see Shubman batting at number three. The five-match series against England will start in Leeds from June 20.
