Adolescence has had a lukewarm reception after some accused the drama of not being true to life, with branding it "irrelevant tosh" and describing it as "anti-white propaganda". While everyone who hasn't been living under a rock will have heard of the film and probably formed their own views on it, how about the less widely publicised Netflix series?

If you thought there'd be some hidden gems in the current list, you wouldn't be mistaken, with Bodyguard one of the most likely to have viewers on the edge of their seats. The six-part series starts with a nail-biting scene in which British Army war veteran David Budd (Richard Madden) is forced to negotiate with a suicide bomber to prevent him killing the entire train - including himself and his two children. He survives, but there's even more conflict in store for the PTSD-sufferer when he's then called upon "to protect a politician who was a main proponent of the very conflict he fought in".

If you've already seen that, another series that should be on your list is Godless, about a quiet mining town now run entirely by women, after most men were killed in a freak accident.

The Walking Dead actress Merrit Wever plays uncompromisingly feminist Mary Agnes, who triumphantly declares: "I'm done with the notion that the bliss of me and my sisters is to be found in childbearing and caregiving!"

However, there's inevitably a twist to the tale, with a "ruthless outlaw" on the loose in search of a fellow former gang member - and it's guaranteed to disturb the peace.

Meanwhile, fans of Sofia Vergara can catch her in the 2024 series Griselda, where her performance as a Colombian drug lord took her totally out of her former "comfort zone" but also won her an Emmy nomination.

Next, anyone who was a fan of actress Yvonne Strahovski in The Handmaid's Tale will enjoy seeing her moving portrayal of Sofie, a flight attendant battling mental illness, in the Stateless series.

Alias Grace, based on an award-winning novel by Margaret Atwood, is an unconventional portrayal of women, directed by American Psycho's Mary Harron, and it tells the story of a 19th century maid in jail for allegedly murdering her employers.

The question is whether she should receive a pardon due to "insanity", while fans are gripped by not knowing for sure if Grace, played by Sarah Gadon, is guilty or innocent.

Everyone knows about Baby Reindeer, especially after the woman who claimed she inspired the stalking storyline sued for defamation of character - but that's no reason you shouldn't indulge again.

Finally, if you're looking for a war-time drama, Netflix doesn't do them grittier than this: the classic Band of Brothers was cast to one side at the time of its 2001 release, as a real-life declaration of war (the explosion of the Twin Towers on 9/11) commanded everyone's emotional energy.

However, it's worth another look now, seeing Hollywood faves Tom Hanks and Stephen Spielberg reuniting as executive producers for the first time since Saving Private Ryan.

The result is an eye-opening story portraying the American paratroopers who captured Hitler's mountaintop holiday home, the Eagle's Nest.
