While offers a quick fix for toilet , it often masks the issue rather than removing it completely. Increasingly, people are turning to lesser-known but highly effective methods to the toilet bowl properly.

One such trick, which involves a surprising kitchen staple, is being hailed as a game-changer for restoring sparkle to your loo. If you're fed up with scrubbing and strong chemical smells, this unexpected solution could be worth trying. But what is it?

Bathroom expert at Victorian Plumbing Alex Woods shared the surprising solution for removing toilet limescale and stains in as little as 20 minutes.

Mr Woods says: "Dishwasher tablets contain powerful enzymes that break down grease, grime, and limescale, making them a small, yet powerful, cleaning hack for your bathroom.

"You can even use them to clean the toilet bowl - simply drop a dishwasher tablet directly in the bowl and let it dissolve for around 20 minutes, allowing it to break down mineral deposits, stains, and bacteria.

"Once dissolved, use a toilet brush to scrub the sides of the bowl and flush the solution away once done. This should leave the bowl looking sparkling clean and fresh."

There are, however, other natural and effective methods for cleaning the toilet bowl (so you don't end up using all your dishwasher tablets).

Baking soda and white vinegar is a classic combination - pour a cup of baking soda into the bowl followed by a cup of vinegar, let it fizz and sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then scrub.

For those wanting a fresher scent, lemon juice mixed with salt works as a gentle abrasive that also breaks down stains and limescale.

And, of course, dedicated toilet cleaning products with bleach remain a reliable option for disinfecting and whitening in one go.

Choosing the right method often comes down to how tough the stains are and what products you have on hand.

For quick maintenance, the dishwasher tablet hack is as easy as it gets and avoids the need for excessive scrubbing.

Natural methods are ideal for those avoiding chemicals, while commercial cleaners might be necessary for deep-cleaning jobs or neglected loos.

Whatever option you choose, consistency is key - regular cleaning not only keeps your toilet looking pristine, but also helps prevent the build-up of bacteria, odours, and mineral deposits over time.
