In a significant move to elevate the standard of higher education, five renowned foreign universities have been granted official approval to establish campuses in India. This initiative is part of the National Education Policy 2020, which aims to enhance educational quality across the nation.
India is making strides towards becoming a premier global hub for higher education, as evidenced by the recent issuance of Letters of Intent (LoIs) to five prestigious international institutions. Reports indicate that nearly twelve foreign universities may commence operations by the upcoming academic year.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has confirmed that universities from various countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, and Italy, have received LoIs to set up campuses in India. The following five institutions are among those approved:
1. Victoria University (Australia)
2. Western Sydney University (Australia)
3. University of Liverpool (UK)
4. Illinois Institute of Technology (USA)
5. Istituto Europeo di Design (Italy)
This initiative is in direct alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes global collaboration, innovation, and the internationalization of education in India. The policy's goal is to enhance the quality of higher education while inviting esteemed foreign institutions to improve academic standards.
Currently, three foreign universities have already established campuses in India: Deakin University and the University of Wollongong from Australia, located in Gujarat’s GIFT City, and the University of Southampton from the UK, situated in Gurgaon.
The influx of foreign universities is poised to transform India's educational landscape, providing students with access to world-class degrees without the financial burden or challenges associated with studying abroad. This initiative also positions India as a regional educational center, attracting students from neighboring countries.
By facilitating the establishment of foreign universities, the government aims to foster quality investments and knowledge transfer, enabling students to receive top-tier education domestically.
