IIT Delhi has changed its syllabus after more than a decade. This change has been made due to concern about the increasing burden of studies on students and the changing demand of the industry. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi Director Rangan Banerjee gave information. Let us tell you that before this the syllabus of IIT was changed 12 years ago.

In which year was the change made before this?

Director Rangan Banerjee said that before this the syllabus of IIT was changed in the year 2013. "Now the demand of the industry is changing rapidly. This is the time of the rise of AI, so our focus is on sustainability. The work for this improvement started in the year 2022. In the last few years, we have taken the opinion of various stakeholders. We also talked to our alumni about this and also talked to our faculty who are associated with the industry and society. He said, "We have tried to make the curriculum more better and flexible for the students." When will it be implemented? He said, "This syllabus will be implemented from the 2025 academic session. We were worried about the increasing burden on the students, so we paid attention to all the reasons that were a problem for them. This worked a lot in our syllabus improvement. We have reduced the number of core credits per semester, especially in the first two semesters when the first-year students will join, now the burden on them will be less. We have also tried to see that the class size is smaller in the first year."

Now there will be this many students in total in two semesters

The director said that now the class size for the first two semesters will now be 150 instead of 300, so that more personal attention can be given to the students. He said, "We have also focused on learning by doing, so this has been on our mind to reduce stress, but we also want to make sure that our syllabus has elements of rigor and choice and then we try to reduce the burden." We have started an honors program in addition to the BTech degree. Apart from this, now a graduate student can appeal for an MTech degree in any of the available MTech programs at IIT Delhi at the end of his third year. This will enable the student to get both graduation and postgraduation degrees in 5 years.

Important changes made in the syllabus

He said, "One of the important changes that have been made in the syllabus is in programming education, in which in the introductory course of programming AI-based code generators have been integrated. Students of all BTech streams will have to undergo mandatory training on how to use AI responsibly and ethically for the future."

He said, "Similarly, every graduate will be given some training on sustainability. We are giving more opportunities for practical education, internships and teamwork, so that our graduates are future-ready and can make their mark on India and the world in the times to come."

Syllabus of 8 big institutes was studied

IIT Delhi said, the 15-member curriculum revamp panel studied the syllabus of 8 institutes - Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Cambridge; Harvey Mudd College, California; Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Indiana. Apart from this, the institute did an in-depth study of the syllabus being taught at IIT Bombay, Gandhinagar and Hyderabad.
