In simple words, a cheque is a written order that you (the account holder) give to your bank that a certain amount from your account be paid to a particular person or organisation, or to you. This can be considered as a kind of 'written promise' that you have that much money in your account.

Bearer cheque is a kind of cheque that any person can get encashed from the bank. Whether his name is written on this cheque or not. It is also called "Payable to Bearer" cheque. The biggest risk of this cheque is that if it gets lost somewhere, then anyone can misuse it.

Order cheque is considered a safe payment option. On this cheque, the word "Bearer" is crossed out and "Or Order" is written, or it is already printed. This cheque can only be used by those whose name is clearly written on the cheque. Actually, in this cheque, the bank fully confirms the identity of the beneficiary before making the payment.

Crossed cheque is considered a very safe payment option, in which two diagonal lines (//) are drawn on the upper left corner of the cheque. This type of cheque cannot be paid in cash, rather its amount is deposited only in the bank account of the person or organisation whose name is written on the cheque. This reduces the chances of fraud considerably.

Account payee cheque is considered a safe option for cheque payment. In this, "Account Payee" or "A/C Payee" is written between two diagonal lines on the top of the cheque. It is clear that this amount will be deposited only in the bank account of the person or organization whose name is on the cheque. It can never be transferred to anyone else's account.

A post-dated cheque is one on which a fixed future date is written instead of the present date. This cheque is used when you decide on which date in the future it will be used. The bank also processes this cheque only when that date arrives. This type of cheque is used for loan payments or transactions in installments.

A stale cheque is one whose validity has expired, i.e. three months have passed from the date written on it. The bank never pays any such cheque. It is very important for you to always keep in mind the time limit to avoid stale cheques.

An ante-dated cheque is one on which an old date before the present date is written. This cheque is considered completely valid, but only until it becomes more than three months old, i.e. it does not become stale. It is often used to show the date of payment as past, but it is important to keep in mind its validity period.

People who travel often prefer to use this cheque instead of carrying a lot of cash with them. This cheque, which is used during travel, is used to withdraw cash from the bank when needed. The special thing is that these cheques never expire.

The bank issues bankers cheque on behalf of the account holder. It is considered a type of bank draft which is also called demand draft. Payment of this type of cheque is made in the same city where it has been issued. In simple words, with this cheque, you can send money to any other person in your city.

If you all usually use cheques, then it is very important to understand its types properly beforehand because a small negligence on your part regarding cheques can cause you a big loss.
