A historical event has been recorded in the world of astronomy. A supermasive black hole in the galaxy SDSS1335+0728, located 300 million light years away from the Earth, has been suddenly active now. For the first time, scientists have seen a black hole to be active in a real-time. The mass of this black hole is 1 million times more than our sun and its sharp glow has shocked everyone.
SDSS1335+0728, which is located in the class Nakshatra, was in normal condition until 2019. But Zwicky Transient Facility found that its shine is suddenly increasing. This was followed by a thorough study with several devices including the Veri Large Telescope (VLT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO).
Ultraviolet, optical and infrared waves are now coming out of the center of this galaxy. It also started the X-ray emissions by February 2024, which is a proof of its exceptional active. This black hole is now swallowing the surrounding gas and SDSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS1335+0728 has now turned into an active galactic nucleus (Agn).

Paula Sanchez Saiz, the lead writer of the study, says, “Suddenly the glow of this galaxy after being calm for 20 years, there is a rare opportunity to understand the behavior of the black hole.” The incident has been published in the Journal of Astronomy & Astrophysics.
Scientists are also investigating the possibility that the incident may be a slow TDE, in which the black hole destroys a star. But TDEs fade in a few months, while the glow here has been increasing for years. This black hole is now swallowing the gas by creating an acrishan disc, which is emitting excessive energy and light.
Scientists are now constantly monitoring this black hole. ELT (Extremely Large Telescope) of ESO will further highlight this mystery in the coming years. Co-writer Claudio Rikki says, “These huge black holes are usually slept, but this time we have seen him awake.”
