Following their lackluster English Premier League season, Premier League team Manchester United was further humiliated on Wednesday as they lost to Southeast Asian XI in an exhibition match in Kuala Lumpur.
Burmese attacker Maung Maung Lwin scored the game’s first goal in the 71st minute, condemning Ruben Amorim’s United to yet another loss as they fell to a 1-0 loss.
Anwar Ibrahim, the prime minister of Malaysia, made United’s injury worse by making fun of the 20-time English champions in a post.
“Sorry! ManUtd was unable to win the cup once again. Next season will also be a problem for you. I hope that you are not demoted to the Championship. You are indeed strong, ASEAN All Stars! Congratulations!” the PM said in the post.
In front of 72,550 spectators in Kuala Lumpur, Amorim’s team, who had to endure United’s worst season since 1974 with a dismal 15th place finish in the Premier League, took yet another hit when Lwin scored the game-winning goal after Adrian Segecic threaded the ball in.
Amorim took over as United’s manager halfway through the just-finished season. The 40-year-old Portuguese coach came to Manchester from Sporting Lisbon, where he had success with the Metropolis team. But so far, his time at United has been turbulent.
Amorim had the opportunity to win his first trophy at United, but it was in vain as the Red Devils lost to Tottenham in the UEFA Europa League final. The Londoners ended a 17-year trophy drought with a 1-0 victory thanks to a goal from Brennan Johnson. Additionally, winning the UEL gave them a spot in the next UEFA Champions League.
