Everyone has to wash laundry, which means the cost of using a machine can add up. This is especially true if you have a large family and the is constantly on. While there are ways you can cut down costs, like only using it at certain times of the day, an expert has shared certain mistakes you should avoid.

Miele kitchen appliance expert Ryan Adams, director of Ati Harrogate, has shared four mistakes that could be increasing your . One of these is not using the spin cycle and not checking pockets before doing .

1. Not using the spin cycle

The expert said: "Placing wet clothes directly into a tumble dryer forces the appliance to work much harder.

"Running a second spin cycle in the washing machine to remove excess water and untangling items before drying helps the clothes move freely in the drum, reducing strain on the dryer.

"Including a thorough spin cycle before tumble drying can help households potentially save between £29 to £72 annually."

2. Washing towels and bed linen together

According to the expert, washing towels and bed linen in the same load can cause excessive strain on a washing machine.

The added water weight often exceeds the recommended load capacity, potentially damaging the drum shaft and bearings.

The expert added: "Additionally, these items tend to form a single heavy ball during the cycle, which can bounce around and harm the machine's internal parts."

3. Not checking pockets

Coins and other objects left in pockets cause significant damage to washing machines and dryers.

These items can bang around inside the drum, leading to expensive repairs. A quick check is recommended to save machines and prevent unnecessary costs.

4. Not emptying the lint trap

The expert warned that Brits should never neglect the lint trap as it can have "serious consequences".

Ryan explained: "A clogged trap reduces airflow, forcing the dryer to work harder, which not only wastes energy but also risks overheating the appliance.

"Regularly cleaning the lint trap before each drying cycle makes it more efficient and safer, preventing fire hazards."

It's also important to regularly clean the washing machine itself to prevent mould and sludge buildup.
