New Suzuki eAccess first ride review: Is it really spot-on?

The electric vehicle segment looks complete now - with the Japanese two-wheeler makers finally joining the league with electric scooters.

The latest to enter is Suzuki, following a similar path Honda took - launching an electric scooter with their best-selling name, Access. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the Suzuki eAccess.

While the name is familiar, the scooter is new. And unlike Honda, Suzuki has gone for a fixed battery. That said, the eAccess looks youthful and having ridden it around a race track - yes, a go-karting track - here are the impressions we take away. The Suzuki eAccess has shed its bulky looks for something much sleeker

New Suzuki eAccess: First impressions

Let's start with the looks - the Suzuki eAccess has shed its bulky looks with the big rectangular headlight design for something much sleeker. It gets a more proportionate setup but is still mounted above the apron. The blinkers are on the apron with a vertical light strip just below the headlight. That said, the front apron design is also sleeker compared to its ICE sibling.

Move towards the side and you notice weight loss here as well and the exposed rear wheel catches your eye, giving the eAccess a sporty look. Towards the rear, it gets even more interesting and gives the eAccess a more classy appearance. The fit and finish is good - the Japanese pay attention to such things. Suzuki eAccess first ride impressions

The looks get you! Once you start riding the scooter, you notice that you're sitting comfortably, and when you twist the throttle, it goes to match its looks. However - there has to be one - you show it a corner and it's eager to lean in. So why is that a problem? Well, the centre stand catches you quickly and scrapes easily. Ride A and B unlock the full potential of the battery pack

The eAccess uses a fixed, 3 kWh battery that offers a claimed range of 95km. The scooter has a top speed of 71kmph, which is adequate in the city. However, acceleration, range, and recharge times were a few aspects we could not really check owing to the limited duration we had the scooter for.

Battery3.07 kWh
Motor4.1 kW
Torque15 Nn
Range95 km
Charging Time (0-80%)4 hrs 30 mins

The acceleration is brisk, and Suzuki offers three ride modes - Eco, Ride A, and Ride B. The first mode as the name suggests, keeps everything mellow, from acceleration to top speed. Ride A and B unlock the full potential of the battery pack allowing more top end, but offer different regen levels, with A being stronger. Ride A feels much closer to a traditional scooter.

Suzuki eAccess review: Living with it everyday The eAccess is a good handling scooter, has a timeless design, and offers the right amount of goodies

The eAccess gets the right amount of comfort as well, and some of them are well thought out. The instrument cluster is an LCD unit, offering the right amount of information, along with phone connectivity and navigation. The switchgear feels tactile and the overall quality of the scooter feels premium.

The seat is comfortable, yet feels a bit tall - but not out of access. The seat also has a clever trick, as it opens to an angle and is held in that position with a clever mechanism. This is a smart touch to access the limited storage, which will be lost once the charger is stored. Suzuki has opted to locate the battery pack under the seat rather than the floor, eating away boot space - a huge advantage EVs thrive on. Suzuki has opted to locate the battery pack under the seat rather than the floor

The eAccess is a good handling scooter, has a timeless design, and offers the right amount of goodies. However, riding it on a racetrack - where the eAccess would never be ridden - robs us of how it actually feels in the real world. However, after the first ride, albeit a brief one, the eAccess has left us impressed.
