3 Reasons GT Lost To MI IPL 2025: The Mumbai Indians defeated the Gujarat Titans by 20 runs while defending a target of 229 runs in the Eliminator of the Indian Premier League 2025. The match was played on Friday, May 20, at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium (New PCA Stadium) in Mullanpur (New Chandigarh).

The Gujarat Titans got off to a fine start to IPL 2025. After losing their opening game to PBKS, they went on a four-match winning streak against MI, RCB, SRH, and RR. A loss to LSG was followed by wins against DC and KKR. A defeat to RR was next, which came before three wins in a row against SRH, MI, and DC. At this point, GT was at the top of the table. But after finishing their league stage with losses to LSG and CSK, they fell to third. After finishing the league phase with nine wins, 18 points, a positive net run rate in 14 matches and third on the points table, the Titans have lost to MI in the Eliminator and have gone out of the competition.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Indians ended the league stage with eight wins, 16 points, and the best net run rate in 14 matches. They started the season off poorly, with four losses to CSK, GT, LSG, and RCB in their first five matches, with their only win at this point coming against KKR. But from that point on, MI went on a six-match winning streak, defeating DC, SRH, CSK, SRH again, LSG, and RR. A defeat to GT was followed by a win over DC and a loss to PBKS in their final match of the season, which saw them finish fourth on the table. And now, after a win in tonight’s Eliminator, the Indians have made it to Qualifier 2, where they will face the Punjab Kings.

Today, we will look back at three reasons why GT, who looked like the best team in the league for a massive part of the season, lost this Eliminator.

3) Jasprit Bumrah Does It Again

In a match where every bowler who bowled a multi-over spell went for about and over 10 runs per over, Jasprit Bumrah did what he does best. The ace pacer stopped the flow of runs, choked the batters for runs, and took wickets. His performance today proved why he is considered by many to be one of the best cricketers in the world.

Jasprit first came in to bowl the second over of the inning after Gill’s wicket in the first over. Naturally, Bumrah did not allow the batters to relieve any pressure and gave away just four runs. His second over in the powerplay was his most expensive of the night. The veteran fast bowler conceded 11 runs in the fifth over of the inning after Sai Sudharsan and Kusal Mendis had opened their arms.

When defending even a big target got difficult for MI, Bumrah was brought back into the attack in the 14th over, and this might be the best over of the entire match. ‘Jassi’ bowled a series of yorkers, conceded just four runs, and comprehensively bowled a dangerous-looking Washington Sundar.

Then, Jasprit Bumrah came back to bowl the 18th over, with 45 required in three. And despite conceding a six on a misplaced delivery, Bumrah conceded only nine runs in this over when the required run rate was 15. The star-bowler ended his day with an excellent four-over spell of 1/27 at an economy of 6.5. He was the most economical bowler of the day, but that should come as no surprise to anyone.

Credit must also go to Ashwani Kumar, the MI Impact Player, who bowled 3.3 overs today, conceded just 28 runs at 8 rpo, and took one wicket.

2) Losing Wickets At Crucial Moments

While chasing a massive target, the Gujarat Titans lost wickets at crucial junctures of their inning, which resulted in the chase falling short of its target. It all started with captain Shubman Gill. In the race for the Orange Cap before this match, the newly appointed captain of the Indian Test team was dismissed for one in the first over.

Sai Sudharsan then saw off the powerplay with Kusal Mendis, who played a decent supporting role in the first six oners. But then, in the seventh over, the Sri Lankan batter bizarrely got out via hit-wicket, truly a rare sight. At this point, the team score was 67/2 in the seventh over.

Washington Sundar then built a strong partnership with Sai. The two men accelerated the inning to come on par with the required run rate. Sundar, who was playing slowly for a massive run chase, then hit Trent Boult for 16 runs in the last three balls of the 13th over. But when the chase was getting good, Jasprit Bumrah bowled Washington all ends up in the 14th for 48 off 24.

Sundar was himself dismissed in the 16th over after scoring a fine 80 off 49, right before the final push towards the target. Then, in the last two overs, with 36 runs required, Shrfane Rutherford got out. GT lost wickets at all the wrong points during their chase, so much so that even one of these moments saw a wicket not fall, the outcome of this Gujarat Titans vs Mumbai Indians game could have been different.

1) Rohit Sharma Leads The Way

The main reason behind MI’s win today was their brilliant batting performance, which saw them notch up a massive total of 228/5 in 20 overs while batting first. And ultimately, this score was more than enough for them to win this match. And for the Mumbai Indains,. The most important batter of the day was Rohit Sharma, who was also named the Player of the Match tonight.

Rohit opened the innings with Jonny Bairstow, who came into the squad in this match as a replacement for Ryan Rickelton. And after a somewhat disappointing season with the bat for the Hitman, the former captain of the team gave the team a fantastic start. The opening pair raced to 79 runs in the powerplay and ended up scoring 84 in 7.2 overs before Bairstow got out for 47 off 22.

Playing a more supporting role till this point, Sharma really started playing his percentage shots from this point on, ending up scoring his 50 in just 28 balls in the 10th over. Rohit would keep the momentum going while batting alongside Suryakumar Yadav and would end up making 81 runs in 50 deliveries by the time he got out in the 17th over.

As for the rest of the batting order, everyone played their part. Surya scored 33 off 20, while Tilak Varma scored 25 runs in just 11 balls. Team captain Hardik Pandya scored 22 off nine in the death, and even Naman Dhit hit a six before getting out for nine off six. But despite all those meaningful contributions, Rohit Sharma’s innings stands alone as a match-winning knock in this Gujarat Titans vs Mumbai Indians match.
