On Friday, Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis commended the police for apprehending an individual near the Nepal border in connection with the dowry-related suicide of Vaishnavi Hagavane, the daughter-in-law of a former NCP leader.
Vaishnavi Hagavane, who was married to Rajendra Hagavane, a former NCP leader, reportedly took her own life on May 16 due to ongoing physical and mental harassment related to dowry demands at her in-laws' residence in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune district.
In this case, several family members including her father-in-law Rajendra, husband Shashank, mother-in-law Lata, sister-in-law Karishma, and brother-in-law Sushil have been arrested.
Fadnavis stated, "The police have done commendable work. Nilesh Chavan, a close associate of the Hagavane family, had fled to Nepal. The police set a proper trap and arrested him. I had mentioned from the very beginning that no one involved in this case would be spared, and we will not tolerate any haste in the investigation. Our aim is to ensure the strictest punishment for the guilty."
He made these remarks while attending a book launch event.
Chavan is accused of intimidating Vaishnavi's parents.
When asked about a complaint against senior police officer Jalinder Supekar, who is alleged to have attempted to shield the accused, Fadnavis responded, "I have already ordered an investigation into the facts of the complaint. We have made certain decisions to ensure that no pressure can be exerted on the investigation."
