Mandi: A devastating road accident occurred early Sunday morning when a Mahindra pickup truck, carrying six people, lost control and plunged into a deep gorge near the IIT Kamand bridge, close to Kataula in Mandi district. The incident resulted in the immediate deaths of five individuals, while one person suffered serious injuries and is currently receiving medical care at a nearby hospital.
Initial reports from the local police indicate that the vehicle was transporting tent equipment when it veered off the road and fell into the gorge. The group was reportedly on their way to deliver the equipment at the time of the accident.
Preliminary investigations reveal that two of the deceased were from Punjab, and one was from Haryana. Efforts are ongoing to identify all victims and notify their families. Rescue operations commenced promptly after the accident, with local police and emergency services arriving at the scene to recover the bodies and assist the injured.
Authorities have not yet determined the precise cause of the accident, but factors such as overloading, excessive speed, or potential brake failure are being investigated. A thorough inquiry has been launched.
“The vehicle was completely destroyed. We arrived at the scene and began rescue operations with assistance from local residents,” stated a police official involved in the rescue efforts.
