Suspense crime, Digital Desk : The case against Google took a critical step when the U.S. Justice Department stated that Google’s control of internet searches is being dangerously impacted by AI technology. Judge Amit Mehta is now contemplating whether constraining Gemini AI’s filed Google’s access to certain features would assist in re-establishing competition in the industry.

According to the Justice Department, there is no denying that generating AI voices is the new frontier in accessing information on the internet, and monopolistic regulation by organizations such as google will impede the development of new innovative ideas. Judge Mehta is amenable to modifying boundaries because, “We’re trying to kickstart competitors.”

The Changes could Restructure the Industry

The Justice Department wants to control Google’s power over the internet, including the prohibition of certain agreements which grant Google Assistants default positioning contracts on devices that migrate into it. They issued an extremly unprecedent suggestion that required google to get rid of their android powered chrome book, or share access to competitive information with other search engines.

These proposals were immediately challenged by Google’s lawyers who considered them far-fetched and not connected to the initial accusations. They also believed that drastic measures would be taken to restrict America’s competitive position in the international technology industry.

AI Startups Face Barriers Right Out of the Gate

Perplexity and OpenAI’s AI startups reported issues negotiating with hardware partners because of Google’s preexisting interests. They presented to the court that Google’s control prevents equitable competition access to various market opportunities. Some even volunteered to buy Chrome should it be put out—signifying that there is no shortage of interest to get into the AI search engine market.

In Anticipation of a Game Changer Ruling

Mehta’s ruling will either decide this historical antitrust lawsuit or dictate the balance of power in online search and generative AI for years to come. Determining whether the next generation of AI-capable search tools will be able to stand on their own or be forced to live in the shadows of Google’s control.
