News India Live, Digital Desk: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday took stock of the situation by talking to the Chief Ministers of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim as well as the Governor of Manipur amid the devastation due to heavy rains in the Northeast. Shah assured him of all possible help from the Center in dealing with the crisis.
On the social media platform X, Shah said, “He spoke to the Chief Ministers of Assam, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh and the Governor of Manipur in view of the heavy rains in his states. Also assured them of all possible help to deal with any situation. The Modi government stands like a rock in support of the North -North Eastern people.”
Due to heavy and continuous rains, there has been severe floods and landslides in the northeastern states, affecting thousands of people and damaged the infrastructure on a large scale.
Assam is one of the most affected states, with more than 78,000 people in more than 15 districts. The major rivers including Brahmaputra and Barak are flowing above the danger mark, due to which the Central Water Commission has released the ‘Orange Bulletin’. Transport services including trains and fees have been badly interrupted. So far, there have been eight deaths to floods.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that Shah had called him to review the situation. He posted on X, “Honorable Home Minister Shri @AmitShah ji called me some time ago to get information about the floods in Assam and offered all possible assistance to deal with the current situation. I have given information about the steps being taken to them and we are grateful for their anxiety and support.”
Nine people have died due to landslides in the last two days in Arunachal Pradesh. Due to torrential rains, many areas have lost contact and normal life has been disturbed.
About 1,500 tourists are stranded in Mangan district due to major roads being blocked due to landslides in Sikkim. A tragic accident occurred when a vehicle carrying 11 tourists fell into the Teesta River, resulting in a person killed, two injured and eight people went missing.
Manipur has also been affected by heavy rains, where 3,802 people have been affected by floods and landslides in the last 48 hours and 883 houses have been damaged.
The Indian Air Force evacuated 14 people stranded in the Bomjir River on the Assam-Arunachal border under a coordinated rescue operation. The campaign was conducted at the request of Tinsukia District Commissioner Swapnil Paul. All the people, including a person from Arunachal Pradesh, were evacuated safely.
