Joe Root created history in the second ODI of the three-match series between England and West Indies on June 1. The English batsman achieved a historic milestone while pursuing their target of 309 runs. Root, who debuted in ODIs in 2013, was also in the team which clinched the 2019 World Cup.
During the match, Root made a half-century and became England's top run-scorer in ODI cricket. He surpassed former skipper Eoin Morgan for doing so. Root is now at 6,993* runs from 179 ODIs. His record consists of 17 hundreds and 42 half-centuries.
Morgan led the charts for quite a long time until Root surpassed him. Morgan retired with 6,957 runs in 225 games. He had 13 hundreds and 42 half-centuries to his credit and guided England to the victory in the 2019 World Cup. Ian Bell ranks third with 5,416 runs.

Joe Root made his ODI debut in January 2013 against India. He made his first century the following year and was soon a regular fixture in the team. He has represented his country in all three World Cups since making his debut. He did not appear in an ODI after the 2023 World Cup for over a year.
Root came back to the team on the eve of the 2025 Champions Trophy. He had a good performance in the ICC tournament, having scored 225 runs in three matches, including one century and one fifty, and was the fourth highest run-getter of the tournament.
