The FBI has identified Mohamed Sabry Soliman as the man behind a horrifying attack in Boulder, Colorado, on Sunday afternoon.

The rampage saw six victims - aged between 67 and 88 - rushed to hospital after Soliman used a "makeshift flamethrower" and hurled "an incendiary device" into a crowd, according to the FBI. The special agent in charge confirmed the suspect was heard shouting "Free Palestine" during the assault.

The attack targeted participants of Run for Their Lives, an American Jewish group that organises public walks to call for the immediate release of hostages held by Hamas. The organisation's website describes the events as peaceful gatherings to show solidarity with the hostages and their families.

Several people were injured in the chaos, with authorities stating the severity of injuries ranges from minor to more serious. The suspect, Soliman, was also injured in the incident.

A significant law enforcement response remains in place, with local, state and federal agencies actively investigating.

Eyewitnesses earlier described the horrifying scene, with one saying a "man with a weapon [was] lighting people on fire."

FBI Director Kash Patel referred to the shocking act as a "targeted terror attack" in a post on X. However, Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn struck a more cautious tone at an earlier press briefing, saying: "It would be irresponsible for me to speculate on motive this early on."

Authorities in Colorado have vowed to bring the full weight of the law against the man behind a suspected hate-fuelled attack in Boulder, where Jewish demonstrators were targeted with a Molotov cocktail.

District Attorney Michael Dougherty, speaking at a press conference, promised: "In the coming days decisions will be made about what charges to file and where, there's a couple of different options. But what I would stress now is that we are fully united 100% in making sure the charges we bring hold the attacker fully accountable."

Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, posted on X: "Terrorism against Jews does not stop at the Gaza border - it is already burning the streets of America. Today, in Boulder, Colorado, Jewish people marched with a moral and humane demand: to return the hostages.

"In response, the Jewish protesters were brutally attacked, with an attacker throwing a Molotov cocktail at them.

"Make no mistake - this is not a political protest, this is terrorism. The time for statements is over. It is time for concrete action to be taken against the instigators wherever they may be."

The suspect was seen lying face-down on the grass, handcuffed by police without apparent resistance. He reportedly yelled at bystanders before surrendering to armed officers who ordered him to the ground.

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser also condemned the violence, issuing a statement saying:
"My thoughts are with those injured and impacted by today's attack against a group that meets weekly on Boulder's Pearl Street Mall to call for the release of the hostages in Gaza.

"From what we know, this attack appears to be a hate crime given the group that was targeted. I have been in touch with Boulder District Attorney Michael Dougherty and have offered support from the Attorney General's Office.

"People may have differing views about world events and the Israeli-Hamas conflict, but violence is never the answer to settling differences. Hate has no place in Colorado. We all have the right to peaceably assemble and the freedom to speak our views. But these violent acts-which are becoming more frequent, brazen and closer to home-must stop and those who commit these horrific acts must be fully held to account."
