A Chinese tourist has claimed she was fined S$200 (US$155) by her hotel in Singapore after bringing durian back to her room.
Posting under the username Blue Mulberry on Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu on May 26, the female tourist recounted that she had been exploring Singapore with a friend when they came across a roadside durian stall, Asia One reported.
With no seating available, the pair decided to pack the pungent fruit into a styrofoam box and return to their hotel.
During the taxi ride, her friend noted that the distinctive smell was already seeping out.
In an attempt to contain the odor, the woman wrapped the box more tightly in cling wrap.
Back at the hotel, they went straight to their room and began eating the fruit without much thought.
Later that evening, the woman found a note placed on the bed, Indian news media platform NDTV reported.
A photo of the letter reads: “Please be informed that our housekeeper found durian smell in your room… SG200 will be imposed for a cleaning fee,” the tourist wrote in her post.
Durian, known for its strong smell, thorny rind, and large size, is commonly banned on public transport, in hotels, and other enclosed spaces across Asia.
