New Delhi railway station, which is the busiest and important railway station in the country’s capital, will soon be revealed in a new and modern form. Yes, this historic station will be broken and equipped with world class facilities. Starting from March next year, this redevelopment work will not only change the appearance of the station, but will also improve the experience of the passengers. Let us understand every aspect of this mega project and know how and when this change will happen.
The redevelopment of New Delhi railway station was announced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav in the Railway Budget of 2023. The tender of this ambitious project has already been released, and now the preparation to implement it is in full swing. From March 2026, the work of breaking a portion of the station will begin, which is aimed at completing in 45 months. During this time all the 16 platforms and tracks of the station will be renewed. Along with this, seven flyovers will also be built around the station, so that the problem of traffic jam will be overcome. This project will not only modernize the station, but will also facilitate the traffic system of Delhi.
The redevelopment work will be completed in four stages. In the first phase, platforms from Paharganj will be broken from 1 to 5 and will be rebuilt. This process will take about four months. In the second phase, work will be done on platform 6 to 9, while trains from platform 10 to 16 will run normally. In the third phase, there will be work at platform 10 to 13, and 14 to 16 in the fourth phase. During this period, the operation of trains from platform 1 to 9 prepared in the first phase will start again. This well -planned plan of the railway will ensure that passengers have the least inconvenience.
A special holding area is being built to control the crowd at New Delhi station. This area towards Ajmeri Gate will be for passengers with unreserved tickets. Here passengers will be able to wait for their train, and when the train arrives, they will be sent to the platform. This facility will be ready by October 2025, which will help organize the crowd at the station. This step will be especially beneficial for travelers who wait on the platform for a long time.
During the redevelopment, several trains running from New Delhi station will be transferred to other stations. Railways have already prepared for this. Two new platforms at Anand Vihar station and three new platforms have been built at Shakur Basti. Some trains going to Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir will be shifted to Shakur Basti, while trains of UP, Bihar and West Bengal routes will be shifted to Anand Vihar. Apart from this, trains going to Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat can run from Hazrat Nizamuddin station. There are plans to run Rajasthan route trains from Delhi Cantt, and some other trains from Old Delhi and Sarai Rohilla stations. Railways will already inform the passengers about these changes, so that there is no inconvenience.
This redevelopment will not only strengthen the basic structure of the station, but will also provide world -class facilities to the passengers. New platforms, modern waiting areas, better cleanliness, and traffic-free roads are part of this project. In addition, digital displays at the station, better signage, and passenger facilities will increase. This project will prove to be a milestone for Delhi, which will bring a new experience not only for local travelers, but also for tourists coming from India and abroad.
