Suspense crime, Digital Desk : iPad users, rejoice (cautiously)! After years of enduring a stretched-out iPhone app or resorting to web browsers, there’s fresh hope that a dedicated, native Instagram app for Apple’s tablets might finally be in the works. According to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, a well-known source for Apple-, Meta is reportedly considering launching an official Instagram app for the iPad later this year.

This potential development comes hot on the heels of WhatsApp, another Meta-owned platform, finally releasing its long-anticipated native iPad app. This move by WhatsApp has fueled speculation that Meta might be reassessing its strategy for optimizing its popular apps for the larger tablet screen.

For years, Instagram users have voiced their desire for an iPad-specific app. The current experience of using Instagram on an iPad involves either a blown-up version of the iPhone app, which looks awkward and doesn’t utilize the screen real estate effectively, or accessing Instagram via a web browser, which lacks the full functionality and smooth experience of a native application.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri has previously addressed the lack of an iPad app, often stating that while it would be “nice to do,” it wasn’t a top priority compared to other features and that the user base wasn’t large enough to justify the dedicated resources. However, Gurman’s report suggests a possible shift in this thinking within Meta.

If a native Instagram app for iPad does materialize, it would likely offer a user interface tailored for the tablet’s larger display, potentially improving navigation, photo and video viewing, content creation, and overall engagement. This would be a welcome change for millions of iPad owners who use Instagram regularly.

While the news is based on a report and Meta has not officially confirmed any plans, the prospect of a dedicated Instagram iPad app is an exciting one for users who have been patiently waiting for a more optimized experience on their tablets.
