With tension running high in Assam’s Dhubri, the district administration has ordered that shops and market establishments falling within Dhubri town area shall remain closed until further order.
The order, “ Whereas, it has been brought to my notice that there is a likelihood of breach of peace and public tranquillity in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of Dhubri Police Station, due to communal tension, riot risk, violent protests, etc, And whereas, I am satisfied that such a situation may cause disturbance of public order, and immediate preventive action is necessary. Hence, l, Dibakar Nath, District Magistrate, Dhubri in exercise of power(s) conferred upon me under 163 (l) of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, do hereby promulgate order prohibiting the following throughout the Dhubri town area.”
He added, “I hereby direct that all shops, market establishments falling within Dhubri Town area shall remain closed until further order. Assembly of five or more persons in any public places, streets and thoroughfares intending for demonstration/meeting/procession and like of any kind in Dhubri town area. Organizing any Rally/Procession/Meeting/Demonstration are strictly prohibited. Only emergency services like Medical Establishment, Education institutions, SDRF, Fire and Emergency Services, Police, APDCL officials, Army and other Paramilitary forces and such other persons specifically permitted and in whose favour relaxation is granted either by the undersigned or by those who are authorized to issue relaxation of this order as deemed fit and proper.”
On Sunday an alleged cow head was discovered close to a well-known Hanuman temple in Ward No. 3. This incident has ignited strong reactions and fuelled vigorous protests among locals.
Agitated residents staged a blockade on the nearby main road, halting traffic and creating significant disruption. Protesters burned tyres and chanted demands for immediate and decisive action against those behind the act. Despite police efforts to calm the situation, tensions escalated as protestors resisted attempts to remove the item.
In another, a violent altercation stemming from a land dispute rocked Pokalagi village in the Tamarhat area of Dhubri district on Saturday, leaving over 20 individuals injured, including several women.
