Call for Inclusive Future for Kashmiri Pandits

On Monday, Mehbooba Mufti, the leader of the PDP, emphasized the need for a respectful return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits. She stated that their reintegration should not merely be viewed as a symbolic gesture but as a significant opportunity to build a shared, inclusive, and visionary future for Jammu and Kashmir. The former Chief Minister met with Manoj Sinha, the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, at the Raj Bhavan.

Mufti mentioned that she urged the release of individuals held in jails on less serious charges before Eid. Regarding the rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits, she acknowledged it as a lengthy process, stating that some initiatives have already been launched. She noted that Kashmiri Pandits participated in the Panchayat elections and suggested that providing them with reservations in the assembly elections would be an effective way to empower them. Discussions also included the participation of Kashmiris in the Amarnath Yatra.

Mufti further stated that the return of Kashmiri Pandits has become a key agenda for the PDP. She addressed the significant accusations against her party regarding the inability to protect the Kashmiri Pandits residing in the region. She highlighted that every political party in the Union Territory, regardless of its ideology, has consistently supported the idea of their return. She expressed, "The shared pain of their displacement and the desire for reconciliation unites us all in the belief that Kashmir can once again be a place where communities coexist peacefully. To facilitate meaningful progress on this front, an inclusive and phased roadmap has been proposed for your consideration."
