IPL 2025 Final Venue Controversy

The final match of IPL 2025 was initially scheduled to take place at Kolkata's Eden Gardens but has since been moved to Ahmedabad. This decision has drawn criticism from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who labeled it a politically motivated move. In response, BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla has addressed these claims.

Rajeev Shukla emphasized that the relocation of the matches should not be viewed through a political lens. He clarified that the decision was not influenced by any political sentiments. He further explained that had the IPL schedule not been postponed by a week, the final would have occurred in Kolkata, with the playoffs in Hyderabad. The schedule change was made after considering weather conditions, as broadcasters indicated that Kolkata's forecast during that period was unfavorable, risking match cancellations due to rain. Consequently, locations with lower chances of rain, such as Chandigarh and Ahmedabad, were evaluated, leading to the final's relocation.

Shukla also pointed out that this situation is not unique to Kolkata, as matches have previously been shifted from Hyderabad as well, reiterating that there is no political agenda behind these decisions.

Mamata Banerjee's Criticism

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her discontent regarding the IPL final's move from Kolkata, stating, 'I do not build stadiums in my name or railway lines for publicity. Living as an ideal person is sufficient.' She criticized the central government for favoring the newly constructed Modi Stadium for all matches, questioning why no games are being held in Karnataka, Kerala, or Bengal. Banerjee warned that if she spoke out, it could jeopardize the reputation the government has built.
