There were several outrageous letters sent to her warning to leave India and move back to London. Despite all the controversy the film did surprisingly well and became a box office success. Made on a budget of Rs 4 crore Nikaah earned Rs 9 crore making a 225% of profit. The success of the film catapulted Salma to overnight stardom leading to several offers for many other films.
