Guwahati, Jun 3: On Tuesday, Gaurav Gogoi, a Member of Parliament, officially took over as the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), gearing up to lead the party into the upcoming assembly elections.
The transition of leadership occurred at the state Congress headquarters in Guwahati, where Gogoi received the position from the outgoing president, Bhupen Kumar Borah, who had been at the helm for more than three years.
After taking charge, Gogoi addressed the media, emphasizing the party's commitment to its foundational principles of equality and inclusivity.
"We will draw inspiration from the ideologies of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Hitestwar Saikia, and Tarun Gogoi to advance the party together," he stated.
The event was attended by notable party figures, including AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh and Debabrata Saikia, the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly.
Prior to assuming his new role, Gogoi paid a visit to the Kamakhya temple.
The Jorhat MP had recently completed a three-day procession from Sivasagar to Guwahati, arriving in the city late Monday night.
During this rally, which included stops at various locations such as Titabor, Jorhat, Nagaon, Morigaon, and Jagiroad, Gogoi was honored by party workers and addressed his supporters.
His appointment as the new state unit chief was announced by the party's central leadership last week, coinciding with ongoing criticisms from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding Gogoi's British wife's alleged ties to Pakistan's intelligence agency, ISI.
Gogoi, who serves as the Congress's deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, had traveled to his constituency in Jorhat from New Delhi on Saturday.
