The India Meteorological Department (IMD), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, has released its latest all-India monsoon update, highlighting varying weather conditions across the country. As the southwest monsoon continues to advance, several states are facing a mix of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, dust storms, hailstorms, and intense heatwaves.

Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura: Heavy Rainfall to Persist in Northeast

The IMD forecasts continued heavy to very heavy rainfall in the northeastern states, particularly Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura, over the next two days. The rainfall intensity is expected to decrease thereafter. Cherrapunji in Meghalaya and Longding in Arunachal Pradesh received significant rainfall, with some areas recording up to 11 cm in the last 24 hours. Thunderstorms and gusty winds, ranging from 60–70 km/h, are expected to continue, accompanied by isolated hailstorms in hilly regions.

Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan: Thunderstorms and Dust Storms in the Northwest

The northwestern belt, including Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, is experiencing unstable weather triggered by active western disturbances and cyclonic circulations. Thunderstorms and strong squalls with winds touching 70 km/h have been reported. Isolated hailstorms hit Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, while western Rajasthan witnessed severe dust storms. These disturbances are likely to persist over the next two days before conditions stabilize.

Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh: Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds in East and Central India

In parts of eastern and central India, including Bihar, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are being observed. Madhepura in Bihar recorded wind speeds as high as 87 km/h. Meanwhile, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are forecast to receive moderate to heavy rainfall throughout the coming week. The volatile weather poses risks to both agriculture and infrastructure, and residents are advised to take precautions.

Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal: Heatwave Alerts in Eastern India

A heatwave alert remains in effect for Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal. Odisha is expected to remain under heatwave conditions from June 3 to 6, while Gangetic West Bengal will experience similar conditions until June 4. These regions will also face hot and humid conditions due to high day temperatures and low wind activity. Despite sporadic rainfall in northern parts, the heat stress in the plains continues to be a concern.

Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu: Monsoon Showers in the South

In the southern states, Kerala, coastal and south interior Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu are witnessing active monsoon conditions. Kerala and Mahe continue to receive widespread rainfall, with several areas experiencing moderate to heavy downpours. Thunderstorms with winds between 30–40 km/h are expected in Telangana, interior Karnataka, and coastal Andhra Pradesh until June 5. The rain will aid the southwest monsoon’s further progress across the southern peninsula.

Temperature Outlook: Widespread Heat and Humidity Across Multiple Regions

According to the IMD, maximum temperatures in northwest India are likely to fall by 2–3°C over the next two days, followed by a sharp rise of 4–5°C later in the week. Eastern India is expected to witness a 2–3°C rise, while no significant temperature change is predicted in other regions. Hot and humid conditions will dominate coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Odisha, and Gangetic West Bengal between June 3 and 6, exacerbating heat stress.

Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal: Fishermen Advisory Issued

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into several marine zones, including the central Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep waters, the Gulf of Mannar, and coastal areas of Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh from June 3 to 5. Similar warnings apply to the southwest Arabian Sea and Somalia coast between June 6 and 7, due to strong winds and rough sea conditions triggered by cyclonic circulations.

Delhi/NCR: Thunderstorms and Rain Predicted Till June 6

The national capital region, including Delhi, is likely to experience thunderstorms, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds through June 6. These weather patterns are driven by a western disturbance and a cyclonic circulation over Haryana and north Uttar Pradesh. A brief respite from the heat is expected; however, temperatures are likely to rise again later in the week.
