As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the early onset of the Indian monsoon is likely to remain subdued over the coming week. This is the first time in sixteen years that the rains came this early to India. However, predictions suggest that the momentum will recontinue after June 11 as per IMD reports.

SD Sanap from IMD Pune reported the monsoon stall to be over by June 11-12. He elaborated, “the monsoon will strengthen and start covering the remaining parts of the country”, as per a Reuters report.

The early onset of monsoon over Kerala occurred on May 24 and winds escalated quickly towards southern and north-eastern India. While Kerala dealt with heavy waterlogging and disruption in daily life, north-eastern states lost at least 32 lives. Landslides damaged over 3000 houses and the overflowing Teesta River led to largescale infrastructural damage in Assam. As of June 2, IMD had issued a red alert over major districts across Assam, Sikkim and Manipur.

A weather system is likely to develop in the Bay of Bengal around June 11 that will strengthen the monsoon and create favourable conditions for its progress in the northern parts of the country, said another weather department official.

Usually scheduled for June 1, summer rains hit Kerala more than 10 days early. Reaching the rest of northern India by mid-July, regions like Delhi NCR are already experiencing lower temperatures during the day with occasional dust-storms followed by rain.

As per latest IMD updates, orange alert warning persist over multiple districts in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh such as Bikaner, Alwar, Kanpur, Jaunpur and more. These states can experience light thunderstorms, lightning and dust-storms. As per the monsoon stalls prediction, farmers in Maharashtra have been advised to delay sowing. However, light rain may be expected over the east coast.
