Sydney: As this year marks the 36th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre and the 6th anniversary of the Hong Kong pro-democracy movement, the Tibet Information Office showed its support for Chinese democrats by participating in both in-person and virtual commemoration events organized across continents, according to the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) report.
Chinese Liaison Officer Dawa Sangmo of the Tibet Information Office (also known as the Office of Tibet) attended a lecture hosted by the Australia New Zealand Alliance for Victims of the Chinese Communist Regime (NZAVCCR) on June 1st at Ashfield Uniting Church in Sydney. The event honored the Chinese students and residents who lost their lives during the 1989 Beijing protests for freedom and constitutional democratic change, according to CTA.
Chinese Liaison Officer Dawa Sangmo paid their condolences to the student martyrs on behalf of the Tibetan people. She recalled a heartwarming tale told by the late Lodi Gyari Rinpoche about how His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama was among the first international leaders to publicly endorse the Chinese student uprising in 1989.
Although His Holiness was aware that it could jeopardize the possible informal meeting with the Chinese counterpart in Hong Kong, the CTA report states that His Holiness expressed in his statement his strong disappointment over the violent suppression carried out by the Chinese authorities and his deep solidarity with the students.
She reiterated the Tibetan community’s unwavering commitment to justice, truth, and solidarity with all people battling for freedom under Chinese oppression, according to the CTA report.
Chinese democrats in Europe organized a global virtual memorial, in which the Chinese Liaison Officers of the different Offices of Tibet in North America and Europe participated, continuing this show of support. The CTA report said that in addition to the Office of Tibet and Taipei representation, there were Chinese democrats, activists, and scholars from other continents.
