According to the legend, when the war was going on between Lord Shri Rama and Ravana, then Ravana came to know in the middle of the war that his army was losing the war. Then he sought help from his elusive brother Ahiravan. Ahiravan Maa was an ardent devotee of Bhavani and he was a knowledgeable of tantra learning. Using his elusive powers, he put the entire army of Lord Rama to sleep deeply and kidnapped Lord Rama and Lakshmana and took them to the Hades.
Ahiravan was a devotee of Maa Bhavani, so she lit 5 lamps in 5 directions for Maa Bhavani Devi. He had the boon that whoever would extinguish these 5 lamps together, he would be able to kill him. Then Hanumanji made a panchamukhi form to protect Lord Shri Rama and Lakshmana from the clutches of Ahiravan and extinguished 5 lamps together and killed Lord Rama and Lakshmana from his clutches by killing Ahiravana.
