Prayagraj: Scientists from the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Prayagraj have made a discovery that can improve the functionality from smartphones to medical equipment. Scientists have done intensive research on a semiconductor called ‘MOLIBDENAM dye sulfide’ (MOS₂), which will make the mobile phone less heated and the battery will also last longer.
The team of Dr. Sitangshu Bhattacharya, Assistant Professor of the Department of Information and Communications of Triple IT, Dr. Rekha Verma and research student Rishabh Saraswat have proved that it generates light when pressed or pulled Mos₂ and gives more energy in very low power. This discovery can bring revolutionary changes not only for mobile phones, but also for devices such as laser lights, LED bulbs, laptops, and optical fiber.

For this research, a grant of Rs 37 lakh has been received from the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) of the Department of Science and Technology. This research has also been published in the prestigious ‘Physical Review B’ Journal (USA), which reflects its scientific utility and quality.
Dr. Bhattacharya said, “If mobile, laptop or laser lights are made using this semiconductor, then it will give more energy in low power consumption. This will make the mobile less hot and increase the battery capacity.” This technique can also be used in medical devices, RC circuits and optical devices.
