If you also resort to mouthwash in the desire of freshness, then be careful now. Cleaning of smelling and mouth like mint may be good, but daily use can prove to be harmful for your health. Dentist Dr. Miles Madison, who is practicing in California, USA, has recently warned people by sharing a video on Instagram.

Dr. Madison says that most of the mouthwash, especially alcohol-based, eliminate all types of bacteria present in the mouth- also benefits and also harmful. This process affects the manufacture of an essential molecule called nitric oxide in our body, which plays an important role in many things from blood flow to heart health.

Mouthwash compared to ‘Carpet Bombing’

Dr. Miles Madison compared the mouthwash to ‘Carpet Bombing’ in his video, saying that many of these alcohol-based antiseptic mouthwash are not only killing bad bacteria, but also killing many good bacteria. These beneficial bacteria are producing a very important molecule called nitric oxide for our body.

This means that the mouthwash is not only destroyed by the bacteria that causes bad odor, but also good bacteria, which do very important work for our body.

Role of nitric oxide

According to the US National Library of Medicine, nitric oxide (NO) plays an important role in widening blood vessels in the body, preventing platelets from collecting, controlling cell deaths and strengthening the immune system. When these good bacteria are exhausted, the construction of NO in the body is interrupted, which can increase the risk of cardiovascular problems.

Dentist’s strict opposition to daily mouthwash use

Dr. Madison says that if you are using a mouthwash that fills your entire mouth and eliminates all good and bad bacteria, then you are reducing your body’s ability to make nitric oxide. So I do not recommend using these mouthwash daily. Sometimes it is fine, but it is not right to use them everyday.

According to a 2019 study, when we exercise, nitric oxide is formed in the body that opens blood arteries and controls blood pressure. But if we rinse with mouthwash after exercise, this process is interrupted and blood pressure does not fall normally. This study proved that bacteria in the mouth help in controlling blood pressure in the body. That is, not just teeth, your heart health also depends on these bacteria.
