Linking your Aadhaar card with your mobile number is more than just a formality—it’s a security measure and a gateway to multiple government and non-government services. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has advised all Aadhaar cardholders to ensure their mobile number is correctly linked to their Aadhaar. Here’s why it matters and how to do it.
Aadhaar is a vital identity document used for various purposes, including banking, government subsidies, e-KYC, and online verifications. While a mobile number is not mandatory at the time of Aadhaar enrollment, linking one is strongly recommended for the following reasons:
✅ OTP Verification: Most Aadhaar-based verifications (e-KYC, updates, authentication) require an OTP (One-Time Password) sent to the registered mobile number.
🔒 Fraud Protection: Linking a mobile number helps protect your Aadhaar from unauthorized access. Without OTP verification, no one else can misuse your Aadhaar information.
💻 Access to Online Services: Services such as updating your Aadhaar, downloading e-Aadhaar, or checking Aadhaar status require a mobile-linked OTP.
UIDAI recently emphasized this via its official handle on social media, urging citizens to ensure their mobile numbers are linked.
If you haven’t linked your Aadhaar with your mobile number, you may face:
❌ Banking Issues: Trouble accessing banking services, like updating KYC or enabling net banking.
❌ Government Scheme Blockages: You may miss out on direct benefit transfers (DBT) or other government subsidies.
❌ e-KYC Failure: Many apps and services require Aadhaar-based electronic KYC. Without a linked number, your verification cannot be completed.
You can link your mobile number to Aadhaar through both online and offline methods:
