India’s active Covid-19 cases have surpassed 6,000, with six fatalities reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry’s data released on Sunday.

In the past 24 hours, the country reported 769 new cases, and Kerala remains the most affected state. This is followed by Gujarat, West Bengal and Delhi. The country has 6,133 active cases.

In response to the rising cases, the central government has launched mock drills nationwide to evaluate hospital preparedness.

A total of 5,484 patients have recovered and been discharged as of June 8, since January 2025, with 760 of those recoveries occurring this month.

Four states/UTs – Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Mizoram, and Tripura – reported no new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours.

According to official sources, state and district surveillance teams under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme are closely monitoring cases of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI).

“Testing is recommended for all admitted SARI cases and 5 per cent of ILI cases as per guidelines, and positive SARI samples are sent for Whole Genome Sequencing through the ICMR VRDL network, " PTI reported, quoting an official source.

Technical review meetings were held on June 2 and 3, led by Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services, to evaluate the situation and preparedness measures.
