Martin Zubimendi has reportedly put a potential move to Arsenal on hold as he waits for Real Madrid.
A deal for the Spanish international has already been verbally agreed, with only a medical remaining. The transfer was in advanced stages as early as January, with the north London club now set to pay a €60million (£51million) release clause in the player's contract with Real Sociedad.
However, it is reported that Madrid have not given up on the possibility of signing the midfielder this summer. Their new head coach, Xabi Alonso, is said to be keen on reuniting with Zubimendi next season, and the new boss could now be a hugely influential factor.
Spanish publication Diario AS suggests that the club have decided none of the alternatives, such as Stuttgart's Angelo Stiller, are superior and will therefore make a final attempt to secure the 26 year old. Those in the Spanish capital reportedly view Zubimendi as the best available option this summer to replace Toni Kroos, who retired a year ago.
The prospect of playing for Madrid is said to appeal to Zubimendi, who also seems to prefer staying in Spain.
Madrid are reportedly planning to avoid meeting the midfielder's release clause by offering Real Sociedad players on loan free of charge to reduce the fee they pay, reports .
This is because they allegedly consider the release clause too steep a price.
Meeting the salary demands for Zubimendi is also reportedly a problem. AS reports that Arsenal are offering the player an annual wage of approximately £8million (€10million), which equates to about £160,000 per week.
However, Madrid are allegedly only prepared to offer €6-7million for the upcoming season, although this could potentially increase over the duration of his contract.
It is unequivocally stated that any offer will not financially match Arsenal's. Therefore, Zubimendi would have to sacrifice potential future earnings if he desires a move to Madrid.
