Material for making tomato upma

  • Semolina (Rava): 1 cup
  • Tomato: 2 medium shape (finely chopped or puree)
  • Onion: 1 medium shape (finely chopped)
  • Green Chilli: 1-2 (finely chopped, as per taste)
  • Ginger: 1 small piece (grated or finely chopped)
  • Kadhi leaves: 7-8 leaves
  • Rai (mustard seeds): 1/2 teaspoon
  • Chana Dal: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Urad Dal: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Peanut: 1 tbsp (optional)
  • Oil or Ghee: 2 tablespoons
  • Salt: as per taste
  • Chinese: 1/2 teaspoon (optional, to enhance taste)
  • Green Coriander: Finely chopped (for garnish)
  • Water: 2 to 2.5 cups (depends on the quality of semolina)
  • Lemon juice: 1 teaspoon (optional)

Tomato Upma Recipe

  • First of all, fry the semolina in a pan on low flame without oil or ghee till it turns golden. Keep stirring it continuously so that it does not burn. Just after roasting, take it out in a plate.
  • Now heat oil or ghee in the same pan. Add mustard seeds, when the mustard starts crackling, add gram dal and urad dal and fry till it becomes light golden.
  • Now add peanuts (if adding), kadhi leaves, finely chopped onions, green chillies and grated ginger. Fry the onion until it becomes light pink.
  • Now add finely chopped tomatoes (or tomato puree) and salt and mix well. Cook the tomatoes until it softens and the oil starts separating. If you want, you can also add some turmeric and red chili powder at this time.
  • When the tomatoes are cooked, add water and sugar to it and then let a boil in the water.
  • After the water boils, slow down the heat and add the roasted semolina slowly stirring continuously so that the lumps do not fall.
  • After adding semolina, keep stirring it continuously until the semolina absorbs all the water and the upma becomes thick. Cover it and let it cook on low heat for 2-3 minutes so that the semolina swells well.
  • Then finally, turn off the gas and add finely chopped green coriander and add lemon juice and mix well.
  • The bus is ready hot tomato upma. You can also serve it with coconut chutney or pickle for breakfast.
