With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting temperatures in Delhi soaring up to 45°C, the Health Ministry has issued a public advisory urging residents to stay indoors during peak heat hours and stay well-hydrated with safe fluids.

The IMD has sounded an orange alert for Delhi, warning of a severe and prolonged heatwave sweeping across northwestern India. Nighttime temperatures are also expected to remain high, hovering around 29°C.

“Extreme heat can be dangerous. Stay indoors during peak hours, drink safe fluids, eat light, and never leave children or pets in parked vehicles,” the Health Ministry posted on X (formerly Twitter). In case of emergency, citizens are advised to dial 108 or 102, especially if someone shows signs of heatstroke—such as high body temperature, confusion, or unconsciousness.

In an infographic shared online, the Ministry listed key do’s and don’ts:

Avoid going out between 12 noon and 3 pm

Stay away from strenuous physical activity during the afternoon

Avoid cooking during peak heat hours unless the area is well-ventilated

Refrain from consuming alcohol, tea, coffee, soft drinks, and sugary beverages

Never leave children or pets in parked cars

“The heat is rising, but awareness can save lives,” the IMD warned on social media. “A heatwave isn’t just about high temperatures—it’s about recognising the signs and acting fast. Let’s beat the heat together.”

To stay protected, experts and the IMD recommend wearing loose, lightweight, and light-coloured clothing, covering your head with a hat, towel, or umbrella, and drinking water regularly, even if you aren’t thirsty.

On Tuesday, Delhi recorded its highest maximum temperature of the season at 43.8°C, which is 3.6 degrees above the seasonal norm. The heatwave is expected to continue until at least June 12, as per IMD predictions.

Hospitals are already witnessing a spike in heat- cases. Dr. Atul Kakar, from the Department of Internal Medicine at a leading Delhi hospital, said they are treating patients for heat exhaustion, heat stroke, severe dehydration, gastroenteritis, and jaundice.

“Minimise sun exposure, wear full-sleeve clothing, and carry an umbrella,” advised Dr. Kakar. “Include more hydrating foods like watermelon and melon in your diet, and opt for drinks like lassi, lemonade, or fresh juices. And most importantly, avoid eating outside during this time.”

As Delhi battles this heatwave, staying alert, hydrated, and cautious remains the best defence.
