The Congress on Wednesday accused the Modi government of suppressing disagreement and said that the “dangerous misuse” of laws like UAPA to endanger the freedom of expression is part of the BJP’s widespread attack on the Constitution.
Pawan Kheda, head of the Congress’s media and publicity department, said in a post on X, “Under the Modi government, the use of laws to suppress disagreement and justice is increasing. Between 2014 and 2022, only 2.55% punishment rate was achieved in 8,719 UAPA cases, which revealed its misuse to target critics, students, journalists and workers.”
He said, “The recent tendency of the Supreme Court to dismiss the priest petitions by the Supreme Court,” has already deepened this crisis, “he said.
Kheda said that Anand Teltumbade, Naudeep Kaur and Mahesh Raut were arrested under UAPA in the Bhima Koregaon case. He said Talatumbade was released after three years in jail and Kaur was granted bail in the same year, the year he was arrested, but in custody, he was allegedly assaulted and sexually assaulted.
He said that Mahesh Raut has been in jail since 2018. He said, “Student activists Omar Khalid, Sharjil Imam and Safura Zargar were arrested under UAPA for alleged involvement in anti -CAA demonstrations. Omar Khalid and Shajil Imam have been in jail since 2020.” Kheda alleged that Journalist Fahd Shah and Irfan Mehraj were arrested under UAPA.
He said, “Prabir Purkayastha and Amit Chakraborty were arrested in 2023 under the UAPA in the foreign funding case to NewsClic. Fahd Shah was released after 600 days. The rest are still rotting in jails.” Kheda said that these are just more deep roots.
The Congress leader said, “In fact, most of these cases are of vengeance against those who challenge this government. The courts repeatedly expose this misconduct.
