TV presenter is grappling with a "tsunami of sadness" after the loss of her husband Derek Draper, and has disclosed that neglecting her health could mean she faces surgery. The former political lobbyist passed away in 2024 following an extended struggle with the aftermath of COVID-19, with Kate tending to him at their home before his demise. Now 58, the host has shared that she still experiences panic attacks in the night, worrying about administering his medication.

Speaking to The Sun, she said: "I still wake up in the middle of the night panicking that I haven't given him his medicine, or that I have forgotten to move him every hour to prevent the painful contractions in his limbs. The next second I realise he no longer needs that care. There is a moment of relief - that I did not let him down - before a tsunami of sadness hits."

"Caring takes over your whole life. You don't begrudge it, but you suffer because of it."

Kate also revealed that her own health has deteriorated, with her autoimmune thyroid condition having potentially worsened to the point where surgery seems imminent.

"My autoimmune thyroid condition - neglected during Derek's illness - has now worsened significantly. Surgery now looks likely. It could have been avoided," she confided to the newspaper.

This news follows Kate's hospitalisation in 2023 due to 'excruciating' chest pains, brought on by the intense stress she endured while Derek was in recovery.

Kate discovered she required medical help herself after the 2am alarm for GMB sounded and realised in alarm that she was unable to move to switch it off.

Derek, father to teenagers Billy and Darcy with Kate, tragically succumbed to COVID-19 in March 2020 and subsequently spent over a year battling multiple organ failures in hospital. After a prolonged stay, he was discharged in 2023 to continue receiving care at home, only to pass away in January 2024.
