News India Live, Digital Desk: Fertility rate: Do you know that the rate of children in India has reduced considerably before? You may find it strange to hear this, but it is true! Recently a major report has come out, stating that India’s total fertility rate (TFR) has now reached 2.0.
What does it mean?
In simple language, TFR means how many children give birth to average in their lifetime. And the ‘replacement level’ is 2.1. Meaning, if the population has to be kept stable, neither is too much or very low, then every woman should have 2.1 children. Now that India’s rate has come at 2.0, it means that now the population in India is growing, but its speed has slowed down, and we have reached a point where the population can gradually be stable.
This is not just the story of India, this is happening in the whole world!
This is not just a matter of India, the fertility rate is decreasing rapidly in many countries of the world. In some countries, this situation is so serious that the population there is decreasing and the number of old people is increasing.
The lowest rate countries: In South Korea, it has reached 0.72, imagine! In developed countries like Japan, Italy, Spain, the fertility rate is very low, which is hovering around 1.3. These countries are worried that the youth working with them will fall short.
Countries with highest rate: On the other hand, in African countries like Niger, Somalia, Chad, the fertility rate is still above 5.0, that is, the population is growing very fast.
But why is this happening?
There are many reasons for the decline in fertility:
Education and Women Empowerment: Women are now more educated, doing jobs and marriage and children are planning late.
Economic Development: As countries are rich, people prefer small families, because the expenses of children’s education and uproar increase.
Access to contraception: Better means of family planning are now easily available.
Urbanization: People living in cities often produce fewer children than in rural areas.
Overall, this is a complex issue that has social, economic and political meanings. This can be a good news for India as it will reduce the pressure on resources, but at the same time we have to be ready for future challenges, such as growing age population and lack of labor force. This is not just a game of data, but a picture of our society and future.
