On June 2, Raja Raghuvanshi’s body was found in a gorge in Meghalaya, after days of frantic search for the couple, who had gone missing during their honeymoon. Police have now discovered that it was the wife, Sonam, who had planned the murder of her husband because she was in love with someone else.
Bollywood actor and Lok Sabha MP Kangana Ranaut has reacted strongly to the case, questioning why the woman didn’t back out of the marriage and instead decided to plan a murder. She also points out how society is yet to recognise the threat posed by “dump people”

In an Instagram Story, Kangana wrote how she’s having a hard time wrapping her head around the “cold-blooded” murder. ““Can someone explain this!! Woman can’t say no to marriage because she is scared of her own parents but she can plan a cold blooded murder with supari killers. This has been on my mind since morning but not able to wrap my head around it!!! Uufffff getting a headache now!!”
She continued and added a warning: “She couldn’t even divorce or run away with her lover. How cruel, heinous and above all absurd and dumb. Dumb people should never be taken lightly. They are the biggest threat to any society... we often laugh at them and think they are harmless but it’s not true, intelligent people may damage others for their own good but remember a dumb person has no idea what they are doing!!! Be aware very aware of dumbness around you.”

Twenty-four-year-old Sonam and 29-year-old Raja from Indore got married on May 11. After their wedding, the couple travelled to Meghalaya for honeymoon and disappeared on May 23. Sonam had allegedly hired killers to get rid of Raja because she wanted to be with her lover, Raj Kushwaha, who worked as an accountant at the company owned by her family.

The case also led to a narrative of hate against people of Northeast and the state for not being safe for travellers. Actor Chum Darang responded strongly to the crime and the unwarranted hate against Northeast.
She wrote in an Instagram Story: “...Also, I saw a lot of people were blaming the locals, the state, the region, to find out what? I am not saying NE states mein crime hota nehi hai, but sidha logon pe ungli uthana acchi baat nehi hai. My condolences (sic).”
