Filmfare is considered one of the most prestigious film awards in the world of Hindi cinema. But do you know when it all began? Which movie won the Best Film title at the very first Filmfare Awards? The honour went to Do Bigha Zameen starring actress Nirupa Roy. It received the first-ever Filmfare Award for Best Film. Let’s delve a little deeper into the story behind this iconic moment.
Do Bigha Zameen was released in 1953. It was directed by Bimal Roy a filmmaker who had already proven his talent in Bengali cinema. The film starred actors like Nirupa Roy and Balraj Sahni in the lead roles. The story revolves around a poor farmer’s family that owns just two bighas of land in their village which they depend on for survival. However when landlords begin to claim ownership of the land the family’s life takes a turn leading them into a struggle for survival.
After the death of Nirupa Roy’s character in the climax scene the film takes a major twist that deeply impacts the audience. Thanks to its powerful storytelling Do Bigha Zameen became one of the most successful movies of the 1950s.
