Every year the third Sunday of June brings an opportunity when we thank our father, grandfather, stepfather, and all the men who played a mentor and guide in our lives. Father’s Day is not just a day of gifts and greeting cards, but a celebration that accepts the deep values of paternity and their impact on life.
Father’s Day is celebrated every year on the third Sunday of June in India, America, Britain and many other countries. This year, this special day will be on 15 June 2025. However, in many countries of the world, this date varies:
Australia and New Zealand: First Sunday of September
Scandinavian countries like Denmark, Norway, Sweden: Second Sunday of November
Catholic countries like Spain, Italy and Portugal: March 19 (St. Joseph’s Day)
Sonora Smart Dod of America started Father’s Day in 1909, inspired by a Mother’s Day discourse. She wanted to honor her father William Jackson Smart, who alone raised six children after the death of her wife.
Sonora urged local churches, shopkeepers and government officials and on 19 June 1910, Father’s Day was celebrated for the first time in Spochen city of Washington.
President Lindon B. Johnson first gave it a government form in 1966 and in 1972 President Richard Nixon declared it an official US holiday.
