After the tragic crash of an Air India flight from Ahmedabad to London on June 12, 2025—which claimed 267 lives—India’s top life insurers, LIC and Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance, have taken a compassionate step by simplifying the insurance claim process for the victims' families.

No Death Certificate Required for Claims

In a major relief for the bereaved families, LIC and Bajaj Allianz have waived the mandatory requirement for a death certificate to file insurance claims. Instead, any official government or airline record confirming the policyholder's death will now be considered valid proof for the claim process.

LIC stated that they are committed to offering timely support and financial assistance to the families affected by this devastating incident involving the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.

Documents Accepted for Claim Settlement

To ease the burden on claimants, LIC has announced several relaxations. The following documents will now be accepted in lieu of a death certificate:

  • Government-confirmed lists of deceased passengers in the crash

  • Compensation documents issued by the central or state government, or the airline

  • Any other official evidence related to the incident

This approach is designed to ensure a hassle-free and compassionate settlement process during this difficult time.

Bajaj Allianz Sets Up Special Claim Settlement Desk

Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance has also stepped forward by launching a dedicated claim settlement desk to prioritize and expedite accident-related death and disability claims.

Key highlights of Bajaj Allianz's relief measures include:

  • Fast-tracked processing of death and disability claims

  • Simplified documentation requirements for nominees and legal heirs

  • A human-centered approach to ensure families receive timely financial support

The Crash: 2 Minutes After Takeoff

The incident occurred just two minutes after Air India Flight AI-221 took off from Ahmedabad for Gatwick Airport (London). The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner tragically crashed into a residential area.

  • The flight had 268 people on board, including 2 pilots and 10 crew members

  • 267 fatalities were reported at the crash site

  • Among the deceased were 53 British, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian national, in addition to Indian citizens

Conclusion: Timely and Compassionate Relief for Families

LIC and Bajaj Allianz have set a humane precedent by simplifying the insurance claims process for families affected by the Air India crash. By removing documentation hurdles and prioritizing payouts, they have ensured that grieving families can access financial support with dignity and speed.
