South Africa and Australia are facing each other in the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025. SA were playing the fourth inning of the game on Day 3, which ended on Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram on the pitch.
During their time on the field when stumps were called, captain Temba Bavuma was at 65 runs off 121 balls and Aiden Markram was at 102 runs off 159 balls. With his centurial knock, Aiden Markram secured a massive feat.
Aiden Markram came in to open the innings for South Africa along with Ryan Rickelton. He batted without making any mistake and kept on going while his partner changed twice- first Rickelton, then Wiaan Mulder. Temba Bavuma then came in to bat along with Aiden.
The pair batter gracefully and rotated strikes when needed, giving each other proper time to rest on the non-striker end, while also piling up runs for the team. Aiden Markram ended up scoring a century by the time stumps were called on Day 3.
Aiden Markram creates history:
Although a total of 14 batters have scored centuries in the final of ICC events, Aiden Markram became the first South African batter to achieve this feat.
Before Aiden Markram, the highest score by any South African batter in the final of an ICC event was 61* off 77 balls by Hansie Cronje.
Apart from being the first South African to score a century in ICC final, Aiden Markram is also the third batter to score a century in the final of WTC. Australia’s Steve Smith and Travis Head are the two who had done so before Aiden Markram.
Speaking about Aiden Markram’s outing on Day 3, he scored 102 runs off 159 balls, which was accompanied by 11 fours. He also added 140 runs for the third wicket while playing alongside Temba Bavuma.
